The “new” Macon State College Library is a completely-integrated academic resource center located in an existing building that originally housed the campus Library, the college Administrative offices, student dining room / kitchen, and other student life services. The two-story 52,000 square foot building was completely gutted and fully renovated to provide all traditional print library resources, also serving as a hub for campus technological resources.
The central circulation / information desk is on the lower level adjacent to 2 main entrances, one of which opens from a new pedestrian plaza area. A café is located near the interior Library entrance.
The lower level of the facility houses the Reference area, a 60-station computer training lab (with moveable wall for dividing into two spaces), small group study rooms, and the Academic Resource Center (ARC). The ARC is a state-of-the-art 80-plus computer center that serves the technological functions of the Library. The ARC is available for all internet computer use and research, on-line classes, assistance with course work, etc.
A new interior elevator and atrium-type stair provides the connection with the second level. The new central stair and elevator required the removal of a section of the existing concrete floor structure. The second level houses the traditional library services and functions, including printed materials (general book collection, periodicals, etc.), traditional reading areas (with data connections available), and group study rooms. Large window openings were cut into two building facades in order to provide natural light and a sense of openness that this building lacked.
The project was accomplished under a Construction Manager-At-Risk construction delivery method. The construction commenced in November of 2004 and was substantially completed by June 30, 2005.

The Charles A. Lanford, M.D. Public Library is a 15,590 SF branch library, part of the Middle Georgia Regional Library System.
The facility houses Adult and Children’s services, browsing, and staff work spaces. In addition to traditional book stacks, there is also a significant infrastructure for computer technology throughout the building. The Library technological resources include children’s and adult’s PC stations for research and similar uses, with separate stand-up stations for patrons checking email. Wireless access is also available for patrons’ use.
The Children’s area provides ample open space for Story Hour programs and other activities. The Adult area features fiction and non-fiction collections, reference, browsing, and a separate reading area for newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals.
The exterior architectural style of the building reflects the character of historic Heard Elementary School which is immediately across the street.
