A former Trailways Bus Station, c. 1895, located in downtown Macon was fully renovated to provide ideally located new facilities for the Macon-Bibb County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The property has bus parking slots, is easily accessible from the nearby interstate, and is within comfortable walking distance of Macon’s entertainment district. With the help of a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the rehabilitation of the bus station was carried out in accordance with the Federal Guidelines for Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings.
The main floor consists of a 2,500 SF customer service and lobby area with exhibits, kiosks, and interactive displays. A 50-seat theater features video presentation of local and regional tourism attractions. The remaining area provides office and storage space, and public restrooms, with a large conference room and offices located on the second floor. A glass wall along the second floor gallery provides light to the main floor lobby space.
With this facility, the Convention and Visitors Bureau now has the capability to meet the economic development needs of the mid-state and a large portion of rural Georgia. The productive utilization of this property not only enhanced Macon’s downtown revitalization efforts but also increased the value of the surrounding historic buildings. This once blighted and abandoned bus station has been transformed into what is now a multipurpose, state-of-the-art Downtown Visitor Center in the heart of Macon’s Historic Business District.

Multipurpose spaces are provided within the facility so the supporting agencies can have meeting / training space for special programs. These spaces, which include a gym / auditorium, training rooms, and a conference room, may also be used by other community groups.
