Project Overview
2009 Vineville is a 106-unit apartment development located in a prominent location on one of the most heavily traveled streets in Macon. The proximity to downtown, shopping, health care, and other services in the Vineville area makes this site highly attractive for senior living.
The project was constructed as part of a Macon HOPE VI grant, one of the few in the country completed on-schedule.
The four new buildings, each housing apartments for independent senior living, take their exterior design cues from the Community Building, a renovated historic structure. The pilasters at the ends of the new apartment buildings tie into the monumental columns on the Community Building’s front porch. Additional design cues include bay windows, deep cornice lines, pediments over the windows, brick/stucco façade patterns, and the color differentiation between materials in the buildings’ facades.
Due to the urban nature of the site and its location in the heart of the Vineville Historic District, the new buildings “address” the street, in keeping with the other large homes and churches in that portion of the historic district. By maintaining this placement of buildings directly adjacent to the street, parking areas at 2009 Vineville remain interior to the site, providing a clearer view of the property from the street.
The Community Building was originally built in the 1830s, as a “country home” in Vineville – at the time, a separate village just outside of town. By the 1960s, the home had long been within Macon proper and had been converted into medical offices.
The renovation of the Community Building required returning the building to its original configuration. Parlors on the main floor now serve as community gathering spaces for community residents. The remainder of the building has been fully renovated to provide a computer center, a fitness center, mail facilities, and office space for management and resident-service agencies.
