Project Overview

Originally constructed in the early 1940’s, Felton Homes was a unique, if dated, public housing development. Several factors – including the property’s location, its composition of single-story duplexes, and the relatively low density of units per acre – contributed to the owner’s decision to transform this property into a green, energy-efficient community.

The principles at the heart of this project were preserve, conserve, and educate.

  • Preserve the basic structural elements thus reducing the amount of materials going to landfill.
  • Conserve energy, water, materials, and resources – both during and after construction.
  • Educate workers about materials and methods during construction (energy conservation and maintenance of the materials and systems utilized in the project).

The intent of this transformational rehabilitation was to provide a more healthy, safe, and efficient living environment for the next generation of Felton Homes residents. The new design not only resulted in greener, more sustainable construction, but also transformed the look of the community. With new siding, windows, and generous porches, the development now truly has a neighborhood quality.
